The Veterans Memorial “Honor and Remember” Ceremony

The Veterans Memorial “Honor and Remember” ceremony will be held at The Colony Five Star Veterans Memorial Plaza
This memorial honors the unselfish contributions by the men and women of our military services.

Guest Speaker: Major James R. Manis was destined to have a long military career. His parents meet and married at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where his Father was stationed during the Korean War. He has served our Country for over 39 years. During Vietnam, he served in the US Navy and was stationed at Orlando Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida. After a short break, he joined The Texas Army National Guard. He has also served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and the US Army Reserves. In 1990, he was called to active duty, to serve during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was The First US Army Reservist called to active duty from Fannin County and the first called to active duty from the 4150th US Army Reserve School. Dallas, Texas. After leaving the US Army Reserve, he joined the Texas State Guard, where he has served the State of Texas in many positions. He currently serves as the Executive Officer of the 3rd Battalion, Texas Medical Brigade. He has been called to active duty every time disaster hits The State of Texas. During Hurricane Katrina and Rita, he was Commander of the North Texas Area. He has served in Hurricanes Dean, Dolly, Gustav, Ike, and Harvey. Also, Tropical Storm Eduard. He also served during the Bastrop Fires. He continues to serve in the Texas State Guard.

He has been an American Red Cross Volunteer since 1968 and has served on National Disaster Team and served as an instructor for Disaster and Health and Safety. He served as an Adjutant in the American Legion Post 283, in Bonham, Texas and the AMVETS, in Morristown, Tennessee. He serves as a volunteer at the Sam Rayburn Veterans Center. He serves on the Fannin County CERT. He was a Firefighter/EMT Volunteer on the Bonham Fire Department. He was a Reserved Deputy Sheriff for Hamblen County, Tennessee and Comanche County, Oklahoma. He was a Rescue Squad Member for Morristown Hamblen Rescue Squad and Ambulance Service, Morristown, Tennessee.
He holds a BBA Decree from Texas A&M University, Commerce, Texas and an AAS and AS Decrees from Grayson College, Denison, Texas; Studied Fire Science at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas; Emergency Management at Center for Domestic Preparedness, Anniston, Alabama.

MAJ Manis has been married to Sheryl (McDonald) Manis for 39 years and they have 3 children, 20 Grandchildren, and 3 Great-grandchildren.
